What You Should Know
Before entering the people (dotdash meredith) sweepstakes, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. Legitimate giveaways will never ask you for payment, credit card information, or your Social Security number. If the entry process asks for anything beyond basic contact information, that is a red flag. The FTC consumer guide on sweepstakes scams is a helpful resource for knowing what to watch out for.
If you win this people (dotdash meredith) sweepstakes, be aware that prizes valued over $600 may be subject to federal and state income tax. The sponsor is required to report the prize value to the IRS, and you will receive a 1099 form at tax time. Factor this into your expectations — a $561 prize is exciting, but understanding the tax implications ahead of time helps you avoid surprises down the road.
Also keep in mind that sweepstakes winners are typically notified by email, so make sure the email address you use for entry is one you check regularly. Check your spam and junk folders periodically as well, since winner notifications sometimes end up there.
